Este Programa aborda la problemática del desarrollo de productos naturales bioactivos con un enfoque multidisciplinario. La propuesta parte del estudio del empleo de recursos naturales renovables y observaciones en campo, para seguir con la comprobación de supuestos efectos biológicos, evaluación del potencial de especies americanas como alimento, medicina o fuentes de materia prima para la industria; aislamiento, elucidación estructural, cuantificación y normalización de los productos bioactivos con posible empleo agroindustrial y/o farmacéutico, entre otros, hasta el desarrollo de los mismos como recursos de interés económico. Se consideran de gran relevancia las investigaciones biotecnológicas con producción/modificación de productos naturales por microorganismos, la búsqueda y desarrollo de compuestos bioactivos y/o sus análogos con posible aplicación industrial, agronómica y su protección mediante patentes.
